Fix : Windows update fails with specific update package : error code : 0x80000FFFF , Windows 7 & Vista

After reading this post you will be able to solve a problem with Windows update where one or two updates might fail to install with a error similar to this : 0x80000FFFF . The solution mentioned below applies to Windows 7 & Vista Computer system with either x86 or x64 ( 32bit or 64bit ) architecture ).

For Windows 7

  • Restart your computer & try to install the updates again.
  • If you have any USB storage or printing/scanning devices unplug them, restart your computer, try installing the updates again.
  • Download & Install this update for your Windows 7 Computer system : CLICK HERE
  • Go to Control panel
  • control_options ( top right corner )
  • Open Internet Options
  • ie_options
  • Refer the screenshot above,
  • Under Browsing History, click on Delete, then check all boxes and click on delete.
  • Now, Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder ( C being your root drive )
  • empty the folder
  • Restart your Computer

How to backup Windows Registry

This post will help you backup the Windows Registry in case a problem related to the registry arises.

Before Backing up the registry let’s make a system restore point:

Start menu –> type create a restore point –> Click on create a restore point.

Now,

To backup the registry:

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps. If you are not logged in as an administrator, you can only change settings that apply to your user account.

  • Open the Registry Editor by clicking the Start button , typing regedit into the Search box, and then pressing ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. (For Windows XP –> start menu-> run-> regedit)
  • Click on My Computer or Computer ( depending on your OS type) Click the File menu, and then click Export.
  • In the Save in box, select the location where you want to save the backup copy, and then type a name for the backup file in the File name box.
  • Click Save.
